MGM 115 Type 16 is a 660/1100 V flexible trailing cable with three screened phase cores, two unscreened earth cores and one unscreened pilot core. It is built to the MGM 115 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series, in five sizes from 3×25+3×10 to 3×95+3×35 mm².
The datasheet assigns Type 16 to excavating, crushing and similar machines, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and in surface plants. Its three auxiliary cores are small and lie in the gaps between the phase cores, so the cable is compact and light for its current rating, which suits machines that move around a working area on a long trailing length.

Application & Features
Selection overview
Crushers, excavators and loading machines draw heavy starting currents and are moved repeatedly, so the supply cable must carry full load current while being dragged across the floor of the working or the plant. Type 16 keeps the same phase sizes and current ratings as the heavier Type 14 but places the earth and pilot cores in the interstices of the phase layup. At 3×50 mm² that gives 43.9 to 49.0 mm overall diameter and about 4200 kg/km, which is easier to handle and reel on a mobile machine.
Splitting the earth path over two cores keeps the cable round and balanced and gives two return conductors in parallel with the three phase screens. The screens are the protective layer: a mechanical fault reaches the earthed tinned copper and nylon braid before live copper is exposed, so the earth-leakage protection trips. The single pilot core serves the earth-continuity or pilot circuit of the machine's control switch.
- Excavator and crusher supply660/1100 V trailing supply for excavating, crushing and similar machines underground and on the surface.
- Two earth coresTwo unscreened earth cores, 10 to 35 mm², share the fault-current return with the phase screens.
- Compact interstitial layupEarth and pilot cores lie between the phase cores, keeping diameter and weight down.
- Non-armoured flexibility5.0 to 6.0 mm chloroprene sheath with no armour for reeling and dragging.

MGM 115 Type 16 is a round six-core trailing cable. The three braid-screened phase cores are laid up in contact, and the two earth cores and the pilot core sit in the gaps between them. A rubber bedding compound fills the layup and a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath covers it; there is no armour.
- Conductor: stranded tinned copper wire to IEC 60228 Class 5, from 196/0.40 mm on 25 mm² to 475/0.50 mm on 95 mm² phase cores.
- Phase insulation: EPR, 1.6 to 2.0 mm depending on size.
- Phase-core screen: tinned copper and nylon braid over each phase core; total screen cross-section 25.4 to 53 mm².
- Earth cores: two unscreened cores of 10 to 35 mm² with 1.0 mm EPR insulation, placed in the interstices of the phase layup.
- Pilot core: one unscreened core, the same size as each earth core, with 1.0 mm EPR insulation, for the pilot or earth-continuity circuit.
- Separator: coloured textile tape for core identification.
- Bedding: rubber-based bedding compound that fills the layup and keeps the cable round.
- Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene compound, 5.0 to 6.0 mm radial thickness.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is MGM 115 Type 16 and how does it differ from the other MGM 115 types?
Type 16 is the MGM 115 trailing cable with three screened phase cores, two unscreened earth cores and one unscreened pilot core placed between the phase cores, without armour. Type 14 has one earth and one pilot core laid up in contact with larger auxiliary sizes and a thicker sheath, Type 7 uses a single bare copper earth, Type 7M screens the pilot as well, Type 7S carries a unit of three thin pilot cores, and Type 11 has three screened phase cores with a single 16 mm² pilot conductor.
Where is Type 16 used and how do I pick the size?
The datasheet lists Type 16 for excavating, crushing and similar machines in deep mines with explosive gas and dust and in surface plants. Choose the phase size from the load current (110 A for 3×25 up to 250 A for 3×95 continuous at 25 °C), then check voltage drop over the trailing length, the 1 s short-circuit current of the supply (3450 to 7300 A), and the bending radius of your reel or guides (362 to 585 mm).
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send the cable type (for example 3×70+3×25), the length per drum and number of drums, the machine and its supply voltage, the pilot or earth-continuity system in use, any sheath marking, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need. Our engineers confirm the construction and return the approved datasheet with the quotation.
Type 16 or Type 14: which one should I choose?
Both carry the same phase current ratings. Type 16 is lighter and slimmer (2770 kg/km and 36.5 to 40.2 mm at 3×25, against 3550 kg/km and 43.2 to 46.5 mm for Type 14) because its earth and pilot cores are smaller and sit between the phase cores. Choose Type 14 when you want larger auxiliary cores and a thicker sheath; choose Type 16 for a compact cable with two earth returns. Armoured MGM power cables are listed in the MGM mining cable category.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
