MGM 115 Type 14 is a 660/1100 V flexible trailing cable with three screened phase cores, one unscreened pilot core and one unscreened earth core. It is built to the MGM 115 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series, in five sizes from 3×25+2×16 to 3×95+2×50 mm².
The datasheet assigns Type 14 to drilling machines, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and in surface work. Tinned Class 5 copper, EPR insulation and a thick chloroprene sheath of 5.0 to 7.0 mm let the cable be dragged and reeled behind the machine, while the tinned copper and nylon braid around each phase core gives an earthed layer between a damaged conductor and the outside world.

Application & Features
Selection overview
A drilling machine moves along the face or the roadway every shift, so its supply cable is pulled, bent over rock edges and walked on by the crew and other machines. Type 14 answers that duty with fine-stranded tinned copper for repeated flexing, EPR cores that stay supple, and an outer chloroprene sheath that is noticeably thicker than on the lighter MGM 115 types. The datasheet also gives a maximum pulling tension for each size, from 638 kgf on 3×25+2×16 to 1446 kgf on 3×95+2×50, which is the figure to check against the cable reel or the haulage method.
The three phase screens are there for protection, not for signal quality. If a pick, a roof fall or a machine track cuts into a phase core, the conductor touches the earthed braid first and the earth-leakage relay trips before any live copper is exposed in a gassy atmosphere. The unscreened pilot core carries the pilot or earth-continuity circuit of the gate-end switch, and the separate earth core returns fault current to the supply.
- Drilling machine supply660/1100 V trailing supply for mobile drilling machines underground and on the surface.
- Screened phase coresTinned copper and nylon braid on each phase core so a mechanical fault becomes an earth fault first.
- Separate pilot and earthOne unscreened pilot core and one unscreened earth core for monitoring and fault return.
- Heavy sheath, no armour5.0 to 7.0 mm chloroprene sheath keeps the cable flexible enough to reel and drag.

Construction
Material and build-up
MGM 115 Type 14 is a round five-core trailing cable. Three braid-screened phase cores, one unscreened pilot core and one unscreened earth core are laid up in contact, covered with a rubber bedding compound and a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath. There is no armour, so the cable stays flexible for reeling and dragging.
- Conductor: stranded tinned copper wire to IEC 60228 Class 5, from 196/0.40 mm on 25 mm² to 475/0.50 mm on 95 mm² phase cores; tinning protects the fine strands in humid mine air.
- Insulation: EPR on every core: 1.6 to 2.0 mm on phase and earth cores, 1.5 to 1.7 mm on the pilot core.
- Phase-core screen: tinned copper and nylon braid over each phase core, giving an earthed layer that turns a crush or cut into an earth fault.
- Pilot and earth cores: one pilot core and one earth core, both insulated and unscreened, for the monitoring circuit and the fault-current return.
- Separator: coloured textile tape over the cores for core identification.
- Lay-up: all five cores laid up in contact to give a compact, round cable.
- Bedding: rubber-based bedding compound that fills the interstices and supports the sheath.
- Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene compound, 5.0 to 7.0 mm radial thickness, for abrasion and tear resistance in trailing service.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is MGM 115 Type 14 and how does it differ from the other MGM 115 types?
Type 14 is the MGM 115 trailing cable with three screened phase cores plus an unscreened pilot core and an unscreened earth core, each insulated, laid up in contact, and without armour. Type 16 has two earth cores and a smaller pilot lying between the phase cores, Type 7 uses a bare copper earth in contact with the phase screens, Type 7M also screens the pilot, Type 7S has a unit of three thin pilot cores, and Type 11 has three screened phase cores with a single 16 mm² pilot conductor.
Where is Type 14 used and how do I pick the size?
The datasheet lists Type 14 for drilling machines in deep mines with explosive gas and dust and for surface use. Pick the phase size from the load current (110 A for 3×25 up to 250 A for 3×95 at 25 °C continuous), then check the voltage drop over the trailing length, the 1 s short-circuit current of the supply, and the maximum pulling tension against your reel or haulage method.
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send the cable type (for example 3×50+2×25), the length per drum and number of drums, the machine and its supply voltage, the pilot or earth-continuity system used at the gate-end switch, any sheath marking, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need. We confirm the auxiliary-core sizes and return the approved datasheet with the quotation.
How does Type 14 compare with Type 16 at the same phase size?
Both have three screened 660/1100 V phase cores with the same current ratings. Type 14 is the heavier design: at 3×25 it measures 43.2 to 46.5 mm and weighs about 3550 kg/km, while Type 16 measures 36.5 to 40.2 mm and weighs about 2770 kg/km, because Type 16 uses thinner 1.0 mm insulated auxiliary cores placed between the phase cores. None of Types 7, 14 and 16 is armoured; armoured MGM power cables are listed in the MGM mining cable category.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
