MGM 109 Type 3123 is the screened member of the 1900/3300 V MGM 109 armoured cable family. It is a three-core PVC-insulated power cable with a copper-backed tape screen around each core and two layers of galvanised steel wire armour, built to the MGM 109 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series.
It is a fixed-installation cable for supplying machines and equipment, such as the incoming feed to a section substation, a transformer or a conveyor drive, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust may accumulate and in surface installations. The screened cores make it the choice when the 3.3 kV circuit needs an earthed screen around every phase.

Application & Features
Selection overview
In a coal mine the 3.3 kV system usually runs from a shaft-bottom or district substation to section switchgear and transformers, then on to the high-power loads near the face. These runs are laid on hangers along roadways and may hang in shafts or inclines, so the cable has to carry its own weight and survive rock falls and knocks from haulage equipment. Type 3123 answers that with two layers of galvanised steel wire, which give tensile strength for vertical and inclined runs and a low-resistance earth return path.
The individual copper tape screen on each core is what separates Type 3123 from the unscreened Type 3023. Each phase sits inside its own earthed screen, so an insulation fault goes to earth within the core and can be detected by earth-leakage protection before it reaches a neighbouring phase. Choose it where the mine's electrical rules or the protection engineer ask for screened 3.3 kV cores, or where the cable runs close to signalling and communication lines.
- Screened 3.3 kV feederCopper-backed tape screen around each core for 1900/3300 V fixed circuits that need an earthed screen per phase.
- Double wire armourTwo layers of galvanised steel wire for shafts, inclines and roadways where tensile load and impact are high.
- Gassy and dusty workingsSpecified for deep mines where explosive gases and dust may accumulate, and for surface plant; mine approval is quoted per order.
- Wide size range3×16 mm² for small transformers up to 3×400 mm² for main 3.3 kV feeders, 82 to 620 A at 25 °C.

Construction
Material and build-up
Type 3123 is a round three-core cable. Each PVC-insulated core carries a semiconductor layer and its own copper-backed tape screen. The three screened cores are laid up in contact with each other, and a PVC bedding separates them from two layers of galvanised steel wire under a special PVC sheath.
- Conductor: electrolytic stranded copper, IEC 60228 Class 2, from 16 to 400 mm², a compact stranded conductor for fixed installation.
- Insulation: PVC, 2.2 mm up to 3×240 mm², 2.4 mm on 3×300 mm² and 2.6 mm on 3×400 mm².
- Semiconductor separator: semiconducting layer over the insulation that evens out the electric field under the metallic screen.
- Core screen: copper-backed tape around each core, giving every phase its own earthed screen.
- Bedding: PVC-based bedding compound, 1.6 to 2.6 mm, which fills the lay-up and forms a round bed for the armour.
- Armour: two layers of flexible galvanised steel wire for tensile strength, impact protection and an earth return path; a galvanised steel tape separator is available as an option.
- Outer sheath: special PVC compound, 2.0 to 3.3 mm depending on size.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is MGM 109 Type 3123 and how does it differ from the other MGM 109 types?
MGM 109 is the armoured fixed-installation power cable specification in the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM series. Type 3123 is its 1900/3300 V three-core version with a copper tape screen on every core and two layers of steel wire armour. Type 3023 has the same voltage and double armour but no core screens, and Type 3013 is unscreened with a single armour layer. The 600/1000 V versions are the double-armoured Type 1023/1024 and the single-armoured Type 1012/1013/1014.
When should I choose the screened Type 3123 instead of Type 3023?
Choose Type 3123 when the mine's electrical rules, the protection scheme or the equipment supplier ask for an earthed screen on each 3.3 kV core, for example on feeders to transformers and section switchgear, or where the cable shares a roadway with signalling and telephone lines. Where unscreened 3.3 kV cable is accepted, Type 3023 is 2 mm smaller in diameter for the same conductor size.
Is Type 3123 a trailing cable?
No. It is PVC insulated, Class 2 stranded and steel wire armoured, so it is laid on hangers or in trays and left in place. Machines that move, such as shearers and continuous miners, need flexible rubber trailing cables; see the MGM 111 and MGM 112 types in the MGM category.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
