MGM 110 is a 110 V multi-core communication cable for mine telephone, signalling and control circuits. It is built to the MGM 110 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series and is offered in two armour builds: a single layer of galvanized steel armour and a heavier double layer.
The signal version carries 2 to 91 cores of 1.5 mm² tinned copper; the telephone version carries 1 to 61 twisted pairs of the same conductor. Every core is PVC insulated, the lay-up is covered with a PVC-based bedding, and a special PVC outer sheath closes the cable. It is intended for fixed runs in shafts, roadways and surface plant of deep mines where explosive gases and dust may accumulate.

Application & Features
Selection overview
A coal mine depends on its communication network as much as on its power network. MGM 110 links the surface control room with shaft signalling, roadway telephones, conveyor pull-wire and interlock circuits, gas-monitoring outstations and district switchgear. These runs are installed once and left in place for years, so the cable is designed as a fixed installation cable: stiff enough to hang in a shaft or on roadway brackets, and armoured so that falling rock, a passing mine car or a careless tool does not cut a safety circuit.
Choose the signal version when each circuit needs its own core, such as interlocks, remote indication and control. Choose the telephone version when voice or data runs over twisted pairs, which reduces crosstalk between circuits. The single-layer armour suits roadway trays and surface ducts; the double-layer armour adds diameter and weight but gives more crush resistance and tensile support for shaft drops and exposed roadway sections.
- Telephone and signal circuitsUp to 91 signal cores or 61 telephone pairs in one sheath for the mine communication backbone.
- Two armour strengthsSingle- or double-layer galvanized steel armour, dimensioned for each core count.
- Gassy and dusty workingsSpecified for fixed installations in deep mines where explosive gases and dust may accumulate; approval is quoted per order.
- Optional steel tape separatorA galvanized steel tape separator can be added under the armour on request.

Selection note: before ordering, ask our engineers to confirm the conductor operating temperature, core colour code, sheath colour and transmission data (loop resistance, capacitance, attenuation) for MGM 110, the conductor class (IEC 60228 Class 2 on the single-layer armour version, Class 1 or 2 on the double-layer armour version) and the pair identification your exchange or signalling system needs.

Construction
Material and build-up
MGM 110 is a round, fixed-installation cable. The PVC-insulated 1.5 mm² cores are laid up in contact with each other, in pairs for the telephone version, then covered by a PVC-based bedding that rounds the core bundle and cushions it under the armour. One or two layers of galvanized steel armour follow, and a special PVC sheath forms the outer jacket.
- Conductor: 1.5 mm² electrolytic tinned copper, 7 wires of 0.5 mm. Tinning protects the copper against corrosion in humid mine air and eases soldering at terminal blocks.
- Insulation: PVC, 0.5 mm thick, giving a core diameter of 2.36 to 2.64 mm.
- Lay-up: all cores laid up in contact; in the telephone version the cores are first twisted into pairs to limit crosstalk between circuits.
- Bedding: PVC-based bedding compound, 1.0 to 1.6 mm radial thickness depending on size, as a cushion between cores and armour.
- Separator (optional): galvanized steel tape under the armour, supplied on request.
- Armour: galvanized steel pliable armour, wire size 1/0.9 mm to 1/2.5 mm depending on cable size, in one layer or two layers.
- Outer sheath: special PVC compound, 1.4 to 2.6 mm radial thickness depending on size and armour version.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is the MGM 110 cable?
MGM 110 is the telephone and signal cable specification in the MGM series issued by the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises for cables used in its mines. The other numbers cover power cables: MGM 109 and MGM 118 are PVC-insulated armoured power cables, while MGM 111, MGM 112 and MGM 115 are rubber-insulated cables for machines. MGM 110 is the only one of the series built for 110 V communication and control circuits, with 1.5 mm² cores or pairs instead of power conductors.
Should I choose single-layer or double-layer armour?
Both versions use the same cores and sheath materials; the difference is mechanical. Single-layer armour keeps the cable lighter and smaller, for example 320 kg/km and 11.6 to 13.0 mm for a 2×1.5 signal cable, and suits roadway trays, brackets and surface ducts. Double-layer armour raises the same size to 570 kg/km and 15.9 to 17.3 mm but gives more crush and tensile protection for shaft drops and exposed roadways. Allow for the larger bending radius of the double-layer build when planning cable routes.
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send whether you need signal cores or telephone pairs, the core or pair count, single- or double-layer armour, whether you want the optional steel tape separator, the length per drum and total quantity, any core identification or sheath marking requirement, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need to see. Our engineers confirm the construction and return the datasheet with the quotation.
How does MGM 110 compare with MGM 109 armoured power cables?
They share the fixed-installation build: PVC insulation, PVC bedding, galvanized steel armour and a special PVC sheath, with single- and double-layer armour options. MGM 110 is a 110 V communication cable with many small 1.5 mm² cores, while MGM 109 carries power at 1000 V or 3300 V, for example the single-armoured MGM 109 Type 1012/1013/1014 or the double-armoured MGM 109 Type 1023/1024. The two are often run side by side in the same roadway; see the MGM mining cable category for the full series.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
