This cable combines a three-core power cable and a four-pair CAT5e data cable in one double-sheathed, steel wire armoured construction for electric vehicle charge points. The power cores are Class 5 flexible stranded copper with XLPE insulation in 4 mm² or 6 mm², and the data element is a CAT5e cable with Class 1 solid copper conductors and PVC insulation.
One cable carries the charger supply and the communication link from the building to the charge point, so an installer lays a single armoured run instead of a power cable plus a separate data cable. The armour gives mechanical protection on external routes, and the cable is rated 600-1000V with a 4kV test voltage.

Application & Features
Selection overview
Home, workplace and small commercial charge points usually take a single-phase supply and need a data connection for network access, back-office communication or load management. A combined cable lets the power and CAT5e data follow the same route from the distribution board or network cabinet to the charger. The 4 mm² version suits shorter or lower-current runs; the 6 mm² version is chosen when the charger current, route length or voltage drop call for the larger conductor.
The steel wire armour and outer PVC sheath protect the cable on routes clipped to walls and masonry or run along structures outdoors, where an unarmoured cable would need additional containment. The route design must accept the 10 × overall diameter bend radius, and the armour must be terminated in suitable glands and bonded as the installation design requires. The CAT5e pairs are terminated separately at the charger's data interface.
- EV charge pointsCombined power and CAT5e data for installations that need both at the charger.
- Power and monitoringMonitoring or communication data follows the power route in the same cable.
- External protected routesSWA mechanical protection and PVC sheathing for exposed runs.
- Masonry or structure routesClipped runs on masonry and structures that accept the 10 × overall diameter bend radius.

Construction
Material and build-up
The cable groups a power circuit and a data circuit under one armour. The three insulated power cores and the CAT5e data cable are laid up, bedded in extruded PVC, armoured with steel wire and covered by the outer PVC sheath.
- Power conductors: Class 5 flexible stranded copper, 4 mm² or 6 mm², three cores (brown, blue, green/yellow).
- Power insulation: XLPE on each power core.
- Data cable: Four-pair CAT5e with Class 1 solid copper conductors and PVC insulation, in its own PVC sheath.
- Bedding: Extruded PVC compound around the power cable construction.
- Armour: Steel wire armour (SWA) for mechanical protection.
- Outer sheath: PVC outer sheath, completing the double-sheathed construction.
FAQ
Selection questions
Why combine power and CAT5e data in one cable?
Networked charge points need a supply and a data link. Combining them in one armoured cable means one trench or wall run, one set of fixings and fewer glands, and the data link cannot be forgotten or routed separately by mistake.
Should I choose 4mm² or 6mm²?
Both versions share the same construction. The choice depends on the charger current, the route length (voltage drop) and the installation method. Send the charger rating and route length and our engineers will confirm the size.
Is there an unarmoured or LSZH version?
Yes. The unarmoured power and CAT5e data cable suits protected indoor routes. Where LSZH sheaths and a screened Cat6A data element are specified, see the armoured Cat6A LSZH cable.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the power size (4 mm² or 6 mm²), quantity and cut lengths, the installation route, the charger type and any CPR class, marking or inspection documents your project requires.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
