MGM 115 Type 7S is a 660/1100 V flexible trailing cable with three screened phase cores, one bare copper earth conductor and an unscreened pilot unit made of three thinner insulated cores. It is built to the MGM 115 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series, and it is the Type 7 variant for machines that need more than one pilot or control conductor.
The cable supplies excavating and crushing machines and other heavy mobile equipment, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and on the surface. It is made in four larger sizes, 3×50 mm² to 3×120 mm², with a 3×4, 3×6 or 3×10 mm² pilot unit, for loads of 170 A to 295 A continuous at 25 °C.

Application & Features
Selection overview
Large mobile machines such as roadheaders, shovels, crushers and loaders often need more than a single pilot wire between the machine and the gate-end box or mobile substation. One conductor may carry the earth-continuity monitoring loop, while others carry a remote stop, an interlock or a status signal back to the supply. Type 7S puts three pilot cores in one unscreened unit inside the power cable, so the machine can be connected with one trailing cable instead of a power cable plus a separate control cable.
The three phase cores keep their tinned copper/nylon braid screens, which are laid in contact with the bare earth so that damage to a power core becomes an earth fault and trips the supply. The pilot unit is unscreened and sized for control current, not for power, which keeps the cable diameter close to the single-pilot designs. Where one screened pilot is required instead, see MGM 115 Type 7M; for a single unscreened pilot, see Type 7.
- Three pilot coresAn unscreened pilot unit with three 4, 6 or 10 mm² cores carries monitoring and control circuits in the power cable.
- Screened phase coresTinned copper/nylon braid on each phase core, in contact with the bare earth conductor along the whole length.
- Heavy machine sizes3×50 to 3×120 mm² phase conductors, 170 A to 295 A continuous and 200 A to 355 A intermittent at 25 °C.
- Gassy and dusty workingsDesigned for deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate, and for surface plant; approval is quoted per order.

Construction
Material and build-up
MGM 115 Type 7S is a round, non-armoured cable. Three screened phase cores and one unscreened pilot unit are laid up in contact with a bare copper earth conductor. The pilot unit holds three thinner insulated cores. A rubber bedding and a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath complete the cable.
- Phase conductors: stranded tinned copper, IEC 60228 Class 5, 50 mm² (396/0.40 mm) to 120 mm² (608/0.50 mm).
- Insulation: EPR on the phase cores (1.7 mm to 2.4 mm) and on the pilot cores (1.4 mm to 1.5 mm); the earth core is not insulated.
- Phase-core screens: tinned copper/nylon braid over each of the three phase cores.
- Earth core: bare copper, unscreened, 25 mm² to 50 mm², in contact with the three phase screens.
- Pilot unit: three unscreened cores of 4, 6 or 10 mm² tinned Class 5 copper, grouped as one unit in the lay-up.
- Separator: coloured textile tape used for core identification.
- Bedding: rubber-based bedding compound that fills the lay-up and keeps the cable round.
- Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene compound against abrasion, tearing and crushing.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is MGM 115 Type 7S and how does it differ from Type 7 and Type 7M?
Type 7S is the MGM 115 flexible cable with three screened phase cores, a bare earth and an unscreened unit of three pilot cores. The standard MGM 115 Type 7 has a single unscreened pilot core, and Type 7M has a single pilot that is screened like the phase cores. Type 11, Type 14 and Type 16 also have screened phase cores, but with a single pilot rather than a pilot unit: Type 11 adds one unscreened pilot core, Type 14 one pilot and one earth core, and Type 16 one pilot and two earth cores; none of the MGM 115 types is armoured.
What are the three pilot cores used for?
They connect control and protection circuits between the machine and its supply: typically an earth-continuity or pilot monitoring loop, plus remote stop, interlock or status signals. Three cores let you run these circuits in the trailing cable itself. The cores are sized 4 to 10 mm² with a conductor resistance of 5.47 to 2.09 Ω/km, so check the loop resistance your monitoring relay allows against the cable length.
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send the cable type (for example 3×95+50+3×6), the length per drum and number of drums, the machine and its supply voltage, what the pilot cores will carry, any core colour or sheath marking requirement, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need. We return the confirmed datasheet with the quotation.
Is Type 7S available below 50 mm²?
The current datasheet covers 3×50, 3×70, 3×95 and 3×120 mm² only. For smaller machines, Type 7 and Type 7M start at 3×16 mm². Other MGM designs are listed in the MGM mining cable category; ask us if you need a Type 7S construction outside the listed sizes.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
