UL 3173 is the UL wire style for 600 V, 125 °C appliance wiring material with cross-linked polyethylene insulation. TEBAOFLEX builds it with a low-smoke, non-halogen XLPE wall over tinned or bare copper, in sizes from 10 AWG to 26 AWG. Cross-linking makes the insulation a thermoset, so it keeps its shape next to hot components and under a soldering iron instead of softening like a thermoplastic wall.
Choose UL 3173 for internal wiring of appliances and electronic equipment where the circuit needs a 600 V rating and the wire runs warm, up to 125 °C continuous. The insulation carries VW-1 and FT2 flame ratings, and its non-halogen compound limits smoke and corrosive gases if the equipment catches fire, which matters in closed cabinets and occupied rooms.

Application & Features
Selection overview
UL 3173 is used for internal wiring in appliances and electronic equipment that runs warm: leads between terminal blocks, switches and controls, connections inside power supplies, inverters and chargers, and wiring in control units mounted close to motors or heaters. Single wires can also be twisted into pairs or laid up into multi-core constructions for signal and control runs inside the same enclosure.
Within the TEBAOFLEX range, compare UL 3266 for the same 125 °C XLPE wire at 300 V, UL 3287 for a 600 V XLPE wire rated 105 °C, and UL 3132 for a 300 V silicone rubber wire rated 150 °C.
- Cross-linked XLPEA thermoset wall that holds its shape near hot parts and during soldering.
- 600 V at 125 °COne wire for mains-voltage internal wiring in equipment that runs warm.
- Low smoke, non-halogenA compound that limits smoke and corrosive gases if the equipment catches fire.
- Pairs and multi-coreSingle wires can be twisted into pairs or laid up into multi-core constructions.

Construction
Material and build-up
UL 3173 is a single-conductor wire with two layers: a tinned or bare copper conductor and one XLPE insulation wall.
- Conductor: tinned or bare copper, stranded from 105/0.254 at 10 AWG to 7/0.16 at 26 AWG; 18 AWG is offered in three strandings and 20 AWG also as a solid 1/0.813 wire.
- Insulation: cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) with thermal stability and chemical resistance, in a low-smoke, non-halogen compound with VW-1 and FT2 flame ratings.
- Wall: every size from 10 AWG to 26 AWG uses the same insulation thickness, so the overall diameter follows the conductor, from 4.60 mm at 10 AWG to 2.08 mm at 26 AWG.
- Assemblies: single wires can be twisted into pairs or laid up into multi-core constructions.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is UL 3173 wire?
UL 3173 is a UL AWM wire style for appliance wiring material rated 600 V and 125 °C. The TEBAOFLEX version uses low-smoke, non-halogen XLPE insulation over tinned or bare copper, from 10 AWG to 26 AWG, for internal wiring of appliances and electronic equipment.
How is UL 3173 different from UL 3266 and UL 3287?
All three use XLPE insulation. UL 3173 is rated 600 V and 125 °C. UL 3266 keeps the 125 °C rating at 300 V, and UL 3287 is rated 600 V at 105 °C with solid or stranded copper. Choose UL 3173 when the circuit needs 600 V and the wire runs hotter than 105 °C.
What does low smoke, non-halogen mean?
The insulation compound contains no halogens such as chlorine or fluorine, so in a fire it gives off less smoke and no corrosive halogen acid gases. This matters in closed equipment cabinets and in rooms where people and electronics need protection from smoke.
Can UL 3173 be supplied as twisted pairs or multi-core?
Yes. Single UL 3173 wires can be twisted into pairs or laid up into multi-core constructions. Tell us the AWG size, the number of cores and the colour sequence you need, and we confirm the construction with the quotation.
What should I send for a quotation?
Send the UL style, AWG size and stranding, tinned or bare copper, insulation colour, single wire, twisted pair or multi-core, put-up length, quantity and any UL, CSA or flame-test marking requirement. Our engineers confirm the construction on the datasheet issued with your quotation.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
