MGM 101 is a 500 V two-core flexible rubber cable that carries the 4 V, 1 A supply from a miner’s belt battery to the cap lamp on the helmet. It is built to the MGM 101 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises mining cable series.
The 2×1 mm² tinned Class 5 copper conductors, EPDM insulation, central strainer and heavy-duty chloroprene sheath are chosen for deep mines where the lead is flexed, dragged and knocked through every shift, in workings where explosive gases and dust may accumulate.

Application & Features
Selection overview
A cap lamp lead is the most handled cable in an underground mine. It runs from the battery pack on the belt, up the back, over the shoulder and onto the helmet, and it is bent, twisted, pulled and rubbed against rock, timber and machinery for the whole shift. MGM 101 is specified for exactly this duty: a small two-core cable with a high-flex conductor, a strainer that takes the pull instead of the copper, and a sheath that survives abrasion in a wet, dusty roadway.
The 4 V, 1 A rating covers the standard lead-acid and alkaline cap lamp batteries that the MGM 101 specification was written around. Lamp rooms usually hold the cable in drum lengths and cut it to size when a lead is replaced, so the cable is treated as a consumable rather than a fixed installation.
- Headcap lamp supplyTwo-core lead between a belt-worn battery and the standard 4 V, 1 A helmet lamp.
- Deep-mine mechanical dutyClass 5 flexible copper and a central strainer for a lead that is bent and pulled all shift.
- Gassy and dusty workingsDesigned for mine environments where explosive gases and dust may accumulate; mine approval is quoted per order.
- Lamp-room replacement stockSupplied in drum lengths for cutting to individual lamp leads; other lengths and sizes on request.

Construction
Material and build-up
MGM 101 is a round two-core cable. The two insulated cores are twisted around a central textile strainer and covered by a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath. The strainer carries the tensile load when the lead is pulled, so the fine-stranded copper is not stretched.
- Conductor: 1 mm² electrolytic tinned copper, 32 wires of 0.201 mm, IEC 60228 Class 5. Tinning protects the fine strands against corrosion in humid mine air.
- Insulation: EPDM rubber on each core; the cores are colour-coded (one red, one black on the standard design) for polarity.
- Central strainer: textile strain member in the centre of the layup that takes the pull instead of the conductors.
- Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene (neoprene) rubber for abrasion, oil and flame performance in the roadway; black as standard.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is the MGM 101 specification?
MGM 101 is the cap lamp cable specification in the MGM series issued by the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises for cables used in its underground coal mines. The other numbers in the series (MGM 109, 110, 111, 112, 115 and 118) cover armoured and screened power cables, telephone and signal cables and flexible trailing cables. TEBAOFLEX manufactures MGM 101 to the construction defined by that specification.
Can MGM 101 be used for anything other than cap lamps?
The cable is dimensioned for a 4 V, 1 A lamp circuit with a 500 V test voltage, so it suits low-voltage instrument, signalling and portable lamp leads of similar duty. It is not a power cable. For 660/1100 V and higher mining power circuits, look at the MGM 112 and MGM 115 trailing cables or the MGM 109 and MGM 118 armoured cables in the same category.
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send the quantity in metres or the number of drums, the drum length you cut leads from, the lamp and battery type if it differs from the standard 4 V, 1 A set, any sheath marking or colour requirement, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need to see. Our engineers confirm the construction and return the approved datasheet with the quotation.
How does MGM 101 compare with VDE-style flexible mining cables?
MGM 101 is a small two-core lamp lead, while the VDE designs such as NSSHCGEÖU(V) and NSSHCGEÖU-Z are 0.6/1 kV screened power cables for machines. They share the flexible tinned Class 5 copper and rubber sheath approach, but the MGM 101 has no screen, no earth core and no armour because the lamp circuit does not need them.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
