MGM 115 Type 11 is a single-size 660/1100 V power cable, 3×16 + 16 mm², made to the MGM 115 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series. Its three phase cores are EPR insulated tinned Class 5 copper, each under a tinned copper and nylon braid screen. The fourth core is a 16 mm² pilot conductor, also EPR insulated but without a screen. All four cores are laid up in contact with coloured textile tape for identification, bedded in rubber compound and covered with a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath.
The datasheet names the duty as power supply for excavating and crushing machines and equipment, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and on the surface. There is no armour, so the cable stays flexible enough to follow a machine that moves along the face or around a crushing station, while the screened phase cores give the earth-leakage and pilot-monitoring circuits of a mine supply a defined path.

Application & Features
Selection overview
A 16 mm² three-phase cable rated 85 A continuous and 96 A intermittent at 25 °C covers medium-sized mobile loads: loaders, drill rigs, small roadheaders, mobile crushers and pumps that are moved as the working advances. Type 11 connects such a machine to its gate-end box or plug, and because it is unarmoured it can be handled, coiled and re-routed as the machine moves.
The pilot conductor is there for the protection system, not for power. A pilot-earth monitoring relay at the supply end checks the loop through the pilot and the screens continuously and trips the supply if the cable is damaged or the plug is withdrawn. With the pilot the same 16 mm² as the phases, the loop resistance stays low over long trailing lengths: 1.24 Ω/km for the pilot and 1.05 Ω/km for the screens in parallel.
- Screened phase coresTinned copper and nylon braid over each of the three phase cores so a damaged cable faults to earthed metal first.
- Full-size pilot conductorUnscreened 16 mm² pilot, same size as the phases, for pilot-earth monitoring circuits.
- Unarmoured and flexibleNo armour; Class 5 copper and chloroprene sheath for a cable that follows a moving machine.
- Deep-mine and surface dutySpecified for mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate, and for surface use; approval is quoted per order.

Construction
Material and build-up
MGM 115 Type 11 is a round four-core cable. Three screened phase cores and one unscreened pilot core of the same size are laid up in contact, separated by coloured textile tape, then bedded and sheathed in chloroprene. There is no armour.
- Conductor: 16 mm² stranded tinned copper, 126 wires of 0.40 mm, IEC 60228 Class 5, 5.5 mm diameter, for phase and pilot cores alike.
- Insulation: EPR, 1.5 mm thick on the phase and pilot cores.
- Phase-core screen: tinned copper and nylon braid over each of the three phase cores.
- Pilot conductor: one 16 mm² EPR insulated core without a screen, used for pilot monitoring of the supply.
- Lay-up and separator: all four cores laid up in contact, with coloured textile tape for core identification.
- Bedding: rubber-based bedding compound over the laid-up cores.
- Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene compound, 3.1 mm radial, for abrasion and moisture resistance on a moving cable.
FAQ
Selection questions
What is MGM 115 Type 11, and how does it differ from other MGM 115 types?
Type 11 is the simplest cable in the MGM 115 specification: three screened 16 mm² phase cores and one unscreened 16 mm² pilot, in a single size. MGM 115 Type 7 adds a bare copper earth conductor and runs from 3×16 to 3×120 mm², MGM 115 Type 16 carries two earth cores and a pilot for 3×25 to 3×95 mm², and MGM 115 Type 14 is aimed at hand-held drilling machines.
What is the pilot conductor for?
The pilot is part of the protection circuit. A pilot-earth monitoring relay at the supply end passes a small current round the loop formed by the pilot and the earthed screens. If the cable is cut, crushed or the plug is pulled, the loop opens and the relay trips the supply before the phase conductors can be exposed. It is not intended to carry load current.
Which details are needed for a quotation?
Send the quantity in metres and the drum or cut lengths, the machine and its supply voltage and load current, the connector or plug type if you want the cable terminated, whether your mine requires armour, any sheath marking or colour requirement, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need.
How does MGM 115 Type 11 compare with the armoured MGM 112 cables?
MGM 112 Types such as 62, 63 and 64 and E2, E4 and E5 carry galvanized steel armour for cable laid along the roadway. MGM 115 Type 11 has no armour, so it is lighter and more flexible for a cable that trails behind a moving machine, and it adds a full-size pilot for monitoring. Both families are listed in the MGM mining cable category.

Quality Assurance
Testing at every stage in our own workshop and laboratory, from incoming copper to the packed drum.

Raw Material Inspection
Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.
- Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
- EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
- Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials

Manufacturing Process Control
Stranding, insulation extrusion, core assembly and sheathing run under recorded process parameters.
- Class 5/6 stranding with lay length and tension monitored for trailing and reeling flexibility
- Continuous-vulcanisation extrusion with wall thickness and spark tests logged on every length
- Operators sign off each stage before the cable moves to the next machine

Electrical Testing
Finished lengths go through the routine tests required by the referenced VDE, ICEA, IEC or NEK standard.
- Conductor resistance and insulation resistance on every length
- Voltage withstand (3.5 kV and higher) and partial-discharge measurement in the shielded HV laboratory
- Screen and pilot-core continuity checks for mining and reeling constructions

Mechanical and Ageing Tests
Samples from production are tested for the duty a mining, crane or submersible cable will actually see.
- Tensile strength and elongation of insulation and sheath before and after ageing
- Hot-set, ozone, oil-immersion and low-temperature bending tests
- Constant-temperature water bath for insulation resistance of submersible constructions

Flame Test and Final Inspection
Before packing, the cable is checked against the order and the flame-performance requirement of its standard.
- Single-cable vertical flame test to IEC 60332-1-2 where specified
- Metre marking, printing, drum length and appearance inspection
- Test report and packing list issued with every shipment
