Product overview

MGM 115 Type 7 is a 660/1100 V flexible trailing cable with three screened phase cores, one unscreened pilot core and one bare copper earth conductor. It is built to the MGM 115 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series, in seven sizes from 3×16+16+16 to 3×120+50+70 mm².

The datasheet assigns Type 7 to excavating and crushing machines and equipment, in deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and on the surface. It is the widest-ranging MGM 115 type, and its datasheet gives the electrical data a designer needs for longer runs: intermittent ratings, reactance at 50 and 60 Hz and a three-phase voltage-drop figure.

Application & Features

Excavators, shovels, loaders and crushers are fed through a trailing cable that follows the machine as it moves and is dragged, reeled and run over. Type 7 is the general-purpose MGM 115 answer for that duty: it covers small machines from 3×16 mm² up to large ones on 3×120 mm², with a continuous rating from 85 to 295 A and a higher intermittent rating for machines that load in cycles.

The design choice that sets Type 7 apart is the bare earth conductor. It is not insulated and is laid in contact with the tinned copper and nylon braids of the three phase cores, so earth conductor and screens form one low-resistance return path (0.26 to 0.7 Ω/km in parallel). A damaged phase core faults to that earthed layer first and the earth-leakage protection trips. The unscreened pilot core carries the pilot or earth-continuity circuit of the gate-end or machine switch.

Construction

MGM 115 Type 7 is a round five-core trailing cable. Three braid-screened phase cores and one insulated, unscreened pilot core are laid up in contact with a bare copper earth conductor, then covered with a rubber bedding compound and a heavy-duty chloroprene sheath. There is no armour.

  • Conductor: stranded tinned copper wire to IEC 60228 Class 5, from 126/0.40 mm on 16 mm² to 608/0.50 mm on 120 mm² phase cores.
  • Insulation: EPR on phase cores (1.5 to 2.4 mm) and on the pilot core (1.5 to 1.7 mm); the earth core is not insulated.
  • Phase-core screen: tinned copper and nylon braid over each phase core, earthed through contact with the bare earth conductor.
  • Earth core: bare stranded copper, 16 to 50 mm², laid in contact with the phase screens to form one earth return.
  • Pilot core: one insulated, unscreened core of 16 to 70 mm² for the pilot or earth-continuity circuit.
  • Separator: coloured textile tape for core identification.
  • Bedding: rubber-based bedding compound that fills the layup.
  • Outer sheath: heavy-duty chloroprene compound for abrasion and tear resistance in trailing service.

FAQ

What is MGM 115 Type 7 and how does it differ from the other MGM 115 types?

Type 7 is the MGM 115 trailing cable with three screened phase cores, one unscreened pilot core and a bare copper earth laid in contact with the screens, without armour. Type 7M has the same layout with a screened pilot, Type 7S replaces the pilot with a unit of three thin cores, Type 14 and Type 16 use insulated earth cores (one in Type 14, two in Type 16) plus a pilot, and Type 11 has three screened phase cores with a single 16 mm² pilot conductor.

How do I select the size of Type 7?

Start from the machine's full-load current: 85 A for 3×16 up to 295 A for 3×120 continuous at 25 °C, with the intermittent column for cyclic loads such as shovels and crushers. Then check voltage drop over the trailing length with the datasheet resistance and reactance, and confirm that the combined screen and earth resistance suits the earth-fault protection setting.

Which details are needed for a quotation?

Send the cable type (for example 3×50+25+25), the length per drum and number of drums, the machine and its supply voltage, the pilot or earth-continuity system in use, any sheath marking, and the mine authority whose approval or test report you need. Because the Type 7 datasheet does not list diameter or weight, we confirm those with the quotation.

Type 7 or Type 7M: which one should I choose?

Both have three screened phase cores, a bare earth and one pilot core. In Type 7 the pilot is unscreened, which keeps the cable simpler to terminate and suits a pilot that carries a control signal. Type 7M adds a braid over the pilot so that damage to the pilot also shows as an earth fault; choose it when the protection scheme depends on the pilot circuit. Other MGM types are listed in the MGM mining cable category.
