Product overview

MGM 118 Type 6020 is a three-core 3800/6600 V power cable with PVC insulated cores, a PVC-based bedding, two layers of galvanized steel pliable armour and a special PVC outer sheath. It is made to the MGM 118 specification of the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprises MGM mining cable series and is the double-armoured, unscreened type of the family.

Like the other MGM 118 types it is a fixed-installation cable that supplies machines and equipment, rated for deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate and for surface use. The second armour layer and thicker outer sheath are what you pay for: more steel around the cores and a lower armour resistance.

Application & Features

Type 6020 is chosen where a 6.6 kV fixed feeder needs more mechanical protection than a single armour gives: routes exposed to rock fall and roof convergence, crossings under haulage, steep or long inclined runs where the armour carries part of the cable weight, and surface runs that are buried or exposed to traffic. The double armour also gives a lower armour resistance than Type 6010 at every size, for example 0.257 Ω/km against 0.322 Ω/km at 3×95 mm².

The price of that protection is size and mass. At 3×95 mm² Type 6020 weighs 11250 kg/km and has a 59.7 to 63.7 mm overall diameter, against 8450 kg/km and 53.1 to 57.1 mm for Type 6010. Check drum capacity, hanger spacing and bending radius (427 to 763 mm) before you switch from a single-armoured design.

  • Double steel armourTwo layers of galvanized steel pliable armour for fixed 6.6 kV feeders on mechanically hard routes.
  • Lower armour resistanceMore steel cross-section than Type 6010 at every size, from 1.53 Ω/km at 3×16.
  • Gassy and dusty workingsSpecified for deep mines where explosive gases and dust can accumulate; mine approval is quoted per order.
  • Nine conductor sizes3×16 to 3×185 mm², rated 86 A to 370 A continuous at 25 °C.

Construction

MGM 118 Type 6020 is a round three-core cable. The PVC insulated cores are laid up in contact with each other, covered by a PVC-based bedding, protected by two layers of galvanized steel pliable armour and finished with a special PVC outer sheath. The cores have no individual metallic screen.

  • Conductor: stranded copper wire to IEC 60228 Class 1 or 2, 16 to 185 mm², 4.90 to 17.00 mm diameter.
  • Insulation: PVC, 3.4 mm thick on every size, rated for a 3800/6600 V system.
  • Separator: semiconductor layer over the insulation; it is not a metallic core screen.
  • Lay-up and bedding: three cores laid up in contact with each other under a PVC-based bedding, 1.4 to 2.6 mm radial thickness.
  • Armour: two layers of galvanized steel pliable armour; a galvanized steel tape armour separator is optional.
  • Outer sheath: special PVC compound, 2.1 to 2.9 mm radial thickness, slightly thicker than on Type 6010 to cover the second armour layer.

FAQ

What is MGM 118 Type 6020 and how does it differ from Types 6010 and 6110?

Type 6020 is the double-armoured, unscreened 3800/6600 V cable of the MGM 118 family. MGM 118 Type 6010 uses the same cores with a lighter armour package, and MGM 118 Type 6110 has a copper-backed tape screen on each core with single armour. Conductor sizes, insulation and current ratings of 6010 and 6020 are the same; armour, sheath, diameter and weight differ.

When is the extra armour worth it?

When the fixed route is exposed to rock fall, roof movement, vehicle crossings or long inclined runs, or when you want a lower armour resistance for the earth-fault return path. On short, protected level runs the lighter Type 6010 is usually enough and easier to handle.

Which details are needed for a quotation?

Send the conductor size, length per drum and total length, system voltage, route type (level, inclined, buried), whether the optional galvanized steel tape armour separator is needed, sheath marking, and the mine approval or test report you require.

How does Type 6020 compare with the double-armoured MGM 109 cables?

MGM 109 has double-armoured types for lower voltages, such as the 3300 V MGM 109 Type 3023 and screened MGM 109 Type 3123, and the 1000 V MGM 109 Type 1023/1024. Type 6020 is the choice when the same double-armoured construction is needed on a 6.6 kV system.

Raw Material Inspection

Every batch of copper rod, rubber compound and reinforcing material is checked before it reaches the line.

  • Copper: conductor resistance, elongation and surface condition on incoming rod and drawn wire
  • EPR, CPE, PUR and silicone compounds: hardness, tensile strength, elongation and ageing samples from each mix
  • Suppliers and batch numbers are recorded so every drum can be traced back to its materials
